High School Survival Guide: How to Spot a Toxic Friend

Everyone knows that friends should be with us through thick and thin. At least they should be... right? However, not all of them are.

When you are surrounded by toxic friends, there is a whole bunch of drama. They will always have a reason to be mad at you. Let’s say you don’t like a movie they want to watch. They could go off on you saying you don’t like anything they like and call you names. Friends that do this bring you down to make them feel better about themselves. Toxic friends can also be the opposite and be very hypocritical and make you feel bad for them all the time and make their problems your fault. They will purposely lie to get sympathy from you and others.

Toxic friends always make you believe that if you make one wrong move, they will leave you. You shouldn’t have to watch your every move just to make sure they will stay friends with you. For example, they really want to go to a party and you don’t want to go. They should respect your choice of not wanting to go. If they don’t respect your boundaries and get upset with you for not doing something with them, then they are not healthy for you and you should be thinking about taking some time off from them.

Now, this is not supposed to tell you all your friends are bad. However, everyone deserves to be happy and have friends that will be there for them.
