The Spirit of Madison band just ended their marching season on October 17th, with their final competition being at the Quad State Competition in Vermillion, South Dakota, with the Spirit ending up in second place in class 3A. With the marching band season over, we now have an exclusive Q and A with senior band member and frontline section leader, Calista Sahr!
Q: What did you think of our marching season for this year?
I think this was a good season for Spirit. Percussion consistently placed very well, which was awesome to see. For the band, it was definitely more of a building year for us, but these sorts of years are very crucial for our marching band to improve.
Q: If you could change one thing from this season, what would it be?
I would change our season’s length. I think if we had two more competitions, we could see so much more improvement.
Q: What is something you are most proud of for this season?
I am very proud of getting first place in percussion. This has been Karstyn’s and my goal since we were 8th graders, so it was truly amazing to get it our last season. Additionally, I am very proud of everyone in my section, who have grown so much as musicians and people throughout the season.
Q: As this being your final season, what is some advice you would give to the underclassman?
I encourage underclassmen to step up in band when the option is presented to them! It is a great way to build leadership and communication skills. For example, I was a sophomore when I became a leader, and it has been a great learning experience. Also, whether you’re an 8th grader or a senior, first chair or someone who struggles with playing their instrument, someone who sees band as their biggest passion or someone who is in it to be with your friends, I encourage you all to continue playing, listening, and appreciating music.
The Spirit of Madison is having their last ever Voyage to Valhalla performance on November 2nd! Hope to see you all there! Once again, WE. ARE. SPIRIT!!
