I recently started learning sign language and have been consistently asked the question: “Why?”. My answer is that I want to connect to people who don’t often get to fully communicate their ideas. With my goal of becoming an elementary teacher, the skill of sign language could always come in handy as well. The universal answer, however, is simple. Sign language fosters inclusivity.
The list of barriers for deaf individuals goes on, including hundreds of stereotypes, limited access to basic communication, and a lack of accommodations. Why not make it slightly easier by learning simple signs such as the alphabet, ‘hello’, or ‘nice to meet you’? Not only does learning sign language help the deaf community, but it boosts and enhances cognitive skills in those who are learning.
If you’re interested in learning, I’d recommend learning from the deaf community. For example, Bill Vacars, a deaf internet personality, created a website to teach correct signs called LifePrint.
