South Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889. It is a landlocked state in the US. South Dakota was admitted as the 40th state when President Benjamin Harrison signed the act. The state was named after the Dakota Sioux tribe.
South Dakota is most known for its natural and cultural landmarks like Mount Rushmore and the Badlands. The state is bisected by the Missouri river, dividing it into two geographically and socially distinct halves known as East River and West River. It has cold, dry winters to warm and semi-humid summers.
