Eastern Woodland Hedgehog

In November, a new tiny mammal was found in Eastern China. Initially, scientists mistook this hedgehog, the Eastern Woodland hedgehog, for the Hugh hedgehog. After numerous DNA tests, it was determined to be a new species. This tiny critter is about as long as a pencil and weighs less than a soda can, similar to other hedgehogs. But what makes this critter different is the distinct variables of their temples and the form of their teeth.

Given that little is known about small mammals in China, this was an amazing discovery. This newfound mammal greatly expanded the knowledge and genus of hedgehogs as a whole. I found this interesting because I used to have a hedgehog, and it was a great little companion.
