Higher. Further. Faster. That’s how it’s done for Marvel’s newest superhero, Captain Marvel. This film was a great way to lay out a background for the past 10 years of Marvel’s movies. We get to see our new leading lady, Brie Larson, soar to new heights and break barriers with her performance in Captain Marvel.
The story opens in 1995 with Carol Danvers on the planet, Kree; caught in a galactic war. Carol/Vers as she’s known on Kree, has no memory of her past. As a Kree warrior, Vers ends up on a mission taking her to earth. S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury is tasked with bringing in Vers for questioning. During their time together the two bond and uncover the secrets about Vers’ past as Carol Danvers on earth.
Now what can I say about this movie other than: “WOW.” I honestly didn’t know what to expect when going in to this movie. This was the movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the first strong female lead. Not only that, it was released on International Women’s Day, which was an awesome play on Marvel’s part. The CGI and fight scenes were great. The chemistry between Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) on screen was excellent and added a lot of comedy to the film. The performances of side characters such as Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), Minerva (Gemma Chan), Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) were exceptional and added to the film’s success. All in all, this movie was very well made, brilliantly cast and wonderfully powerful. Carol Danvers holds much potential as the new leader of a generation of Marvel heroes to come.
After staying for the two end credit scenes, one will leave you shocked and excited, and the other will leave you laughing. There was also a touching tribute to recently deceased Stan Lee, former head of Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe. The famous Stan cameo was included, and very heartwarming.
I recommend this movie to all the Marvel fans who are interested in the background of the MCU and those loyal fans ready to see how Carol Danvers plays into the next installment of the MCU, Avengers: Endgame. I also recommend this movie to just everyone because this was an empowering movie that all people need to see.
