Senior Spotlight: Claire Boyko

If you are ever walking down the street someday and hear the hoot of an owl, or the coo of a dove, you might want to double-check where that noise is coming from to make sure it isn’t Claire Boyko. That’s right, Claire takes pride in her excellent ability to make owl and dove calls. This ability was sparked by boredom as a child one day as she was sitting at home and saw an owl outside. She began trying to communicate with the owl by mimicking its noises, and soon enough, she was able to master the skill. This is just one of the many talents and capabilities that Claire possesses.

Seventeen-year-old Claire Alyse Boyko is the daughter of Kim and Thomas Boyko. Along with her parents, she has an older brother, Jacob, and many pets. The Boyko house is home to seven cats, one dog, and a dove. Claire has been living in Madison since the seventh grade when she and her family moved here from California. Though she misses it at times, Claire says that she wouldn’t go back. She loves new experiences and wouldn’t want to change anything.

If you ever need to find Claire, try stopping by at the local Dairy Queen, where you will see her working as a shift manager. You’ll get the pleasure of her company while getting to enjoy a sweet treat as well. Claire has been working at Dairy Queen for a year and a half and has had the promotion of a shift manager for the last year. She enjoys working at DQ and the higher-ranked position in her job. She likes getting to have big responsibilities and being in charge, or what she likes to call it, “babysitting college kids.” She also really loves getting to clean.

And if you can’t reach Claire at Dairy Queen, school, or her home, she’s probably traveling to some exotic destination out of the country. Claire really enjoys traveling. Gaining new experiences and getting to see aspects of other cultures really intrigues her. Claire has been to Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany, just to name a few. Claire's favorite place that she has traveled to is Iceland. She really enjoyed the beautiful scenery that the country has to offer. She and her family had the opportunity to just drive through the outskirts of town and enjoy the views. She also got to drive through a volcano that had a lake inside of it.

Because of Claire’s attraction to traveling, if she could choose to live anywhere in the whole world for a year, she would live in Wellington, New Zealand. She likes the idea of being on an entirely different hemisphere, along with being surrounded by mountains and wildlife. She describes it as being a “weird zone,” and appreciates the idea of getting to be on her own and having personal space while being able to enjoy her surroundings.

After high school, Claire is planning on attending a four year university and majoring in either Biology or Chemistry. She would like to stay in state, and is considering the University of South Dakota or South Dakota State University. After getting her bachelors degree, she would like to continue her education and go to medical school to pursue a career as a Dermatologist.
