READING RECOVERY
Reading recovery consists of three key components:
1) intensive daily one-to-one instruction for first-grade children who are at risk of
reading failure; 2) an inservice program through which educators are instructed in proven
Reading Recovery techniques; and 3) a research program to monitor program results and
provide support for participating teachers and schools.
Training as a Reading Recovery Teacher requires a full year of
participation in a training program at the University of South Dakota. Madison Central
School District is linked to the School of Education at USD through the training of the
teachers.
The total cost to the school district for the first year for
training and materials is $12,975.00. This is an investment in the future of children who
might otherwise not have success in reading and/or school. This will reduce the need for
future costly remediation programs.
Selected students will receive regular classroom instruction in
reading that is supplemented with daily one-to-one 30 minute lessons for 15 to 20 weeks
with the specially trained Reading Recovery Teacher. The lesson follows a structured
format that includes: 1) re-reading of familiar texts, 2) a running record (analysis) of
the children reading meaningful text, 3) letter identification/making and breaking, 4)
writing a short story, and 5) introduction and reading of a new book for the next day's
lesson.
Research has shown that students that successfully complete the
Reading Recovery Program become average or better readers in the first grade. Follow-up
studies have shown that students maintained progress in second, third and fourth grades.
Madison Central's Reading Recovery teachers are Tammy Jung and Kim Seitz
